Charlotte fills the gaps and adds a new opponent to finish out the 2020 season

Covid-19 has obviously messed up and slowed down this season for every program and conference across the nation. With games being canceled and postponed every week, Charlotte has had their fair share of last-minute hick-ups along the way.
Chapel Hill, Georgia State, and FIU all had to be postponed or canceled due to Covid-19, but the 49ers are still filling in lost slots to gain playtime and fill conference play.
This week, it was announced that the 49ers will be playing Gardener Webb on Nov 14 at noon at Jerry Richardson Stadium. Charlotte and GWU have a really good relationship when it comes to playing each other and this was a great matchup for the Running Bull Dogs to fill a schedule of a season they originally did not intend to play.
FIU will end up coming to Charlotte after all on Dec. 5 to fill in the postponed game from the canceled game earlier in the season. This matchup was originally going to the CUSA home opener for the 49ers but had to be canceled due to FIU having a cluster of positive tests within the program.
What is left in the conference for Charlotte is a steady C-USA schedule against Middle Tennessee, Marshall, Western Kentucky, and FIU. Charlotte is 2-1 in CUSA and if we can win out those games, the 49ers could potentially be in the #1 spot in the east (in conference wins). I do expect Marshall to retain their #1 spot, but with the way the season is going, who knows!
Today, Charlotte announced a home-and-home series with NC State in 2030 and 2031. This adds to the strong caliber teams Charlotte in the next decade and hopefully host with an expanded Jerry Richardson stadium.
It is nice to have a sliver of hope to finish off the season strong and play-out the rest of the schedule, but if there is one thing we have learned this season: you don’t know what to expect until the ball has been kicked.
