If there is one thing Coach Healy has proven in Charlotte is that he can recruit. The newest faces to join Niner Nation officially joined on Feb. 3rd with the announcement of 24 new recruits including seven new transfers.
The newest addition that took the spotlight yesterday was former high school four-star and transfer QB from Texas A&M, James Foster (R- Soph). Having only played three games while at the SEC school, Foster was definitely looking for a program where he could compete to find time on the field. Foster while in highschool was recruited by Alabama and LSU, but eventually chose Texas A&M.
Coach Healy could only describe this pick up as creating a “buzz” (how appropriate for CLT) around the QB, but don't expect Foster to start right off the bat. Healy was quick to add that with starter Chris Reynolds, the two QBs would push each other to perform at their highest level. Just like last season, it would not be a surprise if Reynolds started and the dual QB system with Foster at no. 2.
Another standout is running back Shadrick Byrd (R-Soph.) from Iowa. With the run game being so vital to the 49ers offense, it was a no brainer for Healy and Co. attracted the young running back to join the program.
Special freshman recruit is Bailey Rice, a native of Australia. He was drafted in 2015 for the Australian Football League as a punter. Rice has added to the ranks of foriegn Australian Football and Rugby players who have brought their unique talents to the United States. With high praise of Healy, he was truly influential in the recruiting of Rice. The Australian sports media outlets have been very excited with another Aussie going abroad and so Is Niner Nation.
Along with the transfers comes the strong #21nUp crew that signed this past December. With multiple three stars and some top performing talents from in- state schools, this has truly panned out to be the strongest recruiting class in the young programs history. Stand out WR, Elijah Spencer will bring a lot of talent from his strong high school career which included multiple state championships.
Overall, the coaching staff and program has brought in a strong and outstanding class to Niner Nation. Among other C-USA programs, Charlotte is ranking high with FAU and North Texas with over a dozen three-star recruits.
There is a lot again to be expected with this new class and with the new veteran Offensive Line coaching hire of Herb Hand, the program is only growing stronger. After the inconsistent 2020 season, the 49ers will be ready to prove their worth in conference and opening day game against Duke.
