It's been an exciting two weeks for the 49ers as they have swept Morehead State and William and Mary for the opening two series of the 2021 season. The bats have been hot and the pitchers have been aces on the mound as the young 49ers prepare for big competition in the coming weeks.

Out scoring their opponents in the opening six games 65-14, there has been little mercy and a lot of heavy hitters in the starting lineup. Junior outfielder and proud Texas native, Craig Keuchel has tied with Sophomore Austin Knight with 4 homer runs each to open the season.

The transfer from Tennessee, Knight has had a hit every game so far this season and will have a chance in the next few weeks to take on his former team next week in the Queen City. Knight recorded two HRs against William and Mary this weekend.

Freshman spot light goes to Dom Pilolli, Freshman from Youngstown, Ohio. With 3 RBIs, 4 runs in, 1 HR, and 1 double, Pilolli has made an instant impact as a Freshman on the team. This has been a true testament of the strong class of 20+ men on the roster and talent is not stepping down. Along with Pilolli, David McCabe, Freshman, has roped in 10 RBIs to start the season and 2 HRs.

On the mound, the ace 49ers Andrew Lindsey (.69 ERA) and Matt Brookes (1.29 ERA) have been filling in the pitching void the program has had over the past few seasons. Batting has not been an issue for the 49ers in the past, but with the transfer of Lindsey to Charlotte, the program had picked up a star pitcher to lead the 49ers.

Over the past two series, the Charlotte fielding has been almost perfect with only two errors to open the season and with near perfect fielding from the rest of the team.

The talent at the plate has been fantastic against the first two opponents, but this is to say against weaker programs with stronger ACC and SEC games coming in the next few weeks. With a game against Tennessee and an away series against East Carolina, this is where the first real test start to set in.

Looking ahead, a series against Western Carolina and an away game against UNC Greensboro are lined up for next week with Tennessee, ECU, Charleston, and App State following. The next 2 1/2 weeks will pave the way for Conference USA play and the potential this young team has, but the question is, can they live up to it?
